Little loaves of love - a special challah delivery

Little loaves of love - a special challah delivery

Sharing DIY mini challahs with friends and family

It’s wonderful when children have the opportunity to participate in an act of kindness for someone else. Yesterday, we made mini challahs, and today, we are going to package up them up into little loaves of love for grandparents and Jewish seniors at a local retirement community.

Sharing homemade challah is the Jewish value G’milut Chasadim (acts of loving kindness) and Hazan et Hakol (feeding everyone). At this time of year when we are have just celebrated Thanksgiving and are about to celebrate the light and love of Hanukkah, it is extra special for children to do something thoughtful for someone else. If you don’t have time to bake mini challahs, store bought egg rolls from a grocery store bakery are delicious and work just as well!

Before delivering our mini challahs to the seniors, we purchased small baskets at the dollar store that we lined with tissue paper. Then each mini challah was lovingly wrapped in a small doily which look like beautiful challah covers. Next to the mini challah, we placed a small cup of red grapes (to represent the Shabbat wine) and tucked in a few chocolate covered mints (you could also use gold wrapped chocolate coins during Hanukkah). You can extend the activity by having your children draw a card or create Shabbat Shalom gift tags to tuck into the baskets.
