DIY: Apple "donuts"

DIY: Apple "donuts"

A refreshing and healthy Hanukkah donut for that’s sprinkled with love and especially for littles

There’re so many delicious foods to enjoy during Hanukkah, and when I’m making something with littles in mind, I like to keep the food fun, festive and meaningful for the holiday, like edible dreidels topped with a chocolate kiss, wafer cookie menorahs with cereal candles and sufganiyot (donuts) too! Today we’re in the kitchen making “apple donuts” - a Hanukkah “donut”with a healthy twist.

There’s a 100% chance of sprinkles in today’s forecast!

“Apple donuts” are sliced apple rings spread with yogurt “frosting” and topped with colorful sprinkles! We love them because they’re light and refreshing, and even something we can feel good snacking on all eight days of Hanukkah!

It’s fun to set out sliced apple rings along with all the toppings for a joyful Hanukkah “snacktivity.” For these donuts, we’re keeping our color palette blue and white, like Israel’s flag, with a little orange sprinkled in for an extra burst of happiness.

Getting ready to make “apple donuts!”

So grab some apples, yogurt and sprinkles (and your favorite little human too), and let’s go make some Hanukkah apple donuts!

Hanukkah “Apple Donuts”

Here’s what you’ll need to make about a dozen:

  • 2 large apples

  • Vanilla yogurt

  • Blueberry yogurt (or vanilla yogurt mixed with a little blue natural food coloring)

  • Sprinkles

  • Frosting tip

Here’s how to prep this snacktivity!

Cut your apples. We got about 5-6 slices from each apple. To make the donut hole, push the circle side of the frosting tip into the center of the apple. Our apples were very firm so this was best done by an adult.

Then invite your little to spread the “frosting” onto the apple donut.

And top with sprinkles.

And that’s it! Apple donuts for Hanukkah!

They’re also fun to share with friends or to serve at a party (refrigerate after making them until you’re ready to serve).

If you’d like, you can say a blessing before eating apple donuts. In Judaism, there are blessings for almost every moment of the day. For spinning a dreidel for the very first time this year, to lighting Hanukkah candles each night, and for eating apple donuts.

Ba-Ruch A-tah A-do-noi, Elo-hai-nu Me-lech Ha-o-lam, Borei Pri Ha-etz.

After snacking on apple donuts, if you want to extend your time celebrating Hanukkah with littles, you can make super simple dreidel necklaces together too!
