This blog is filled with ideas to turn everyday moments into Jewish moments, especially for families with young children.

A day at the farm

A day at the farm

Noah’s Ark comes to life with an outing to a petting farm.

We’re just getting ready to start the second Hebrew month of the Jewish calendar – the month of Cheshvan (falling in October or November). This month brings us the well-loved story of Noah and his ark full of animals. There are so many cute storybooks to share, but my favorite activity to mark the month is a family outing to a petting farm.

There’s something really special about seeing so many different animals up close and watching smiles spread across the faces of children and parents alike as small hands hold a baby bunny or a baby chick. I remember the first time my daughter went to a petting farm. She cradled a duckling and wouldn’t let go.

Taking care of and being kind to animals is the Jewish value Tza’ar Ba’alet Chayim (Kindness to Animals). There are so many ways we can be kind to animals. We can visit and learn about animals on the farm, take care of our own pets with extra walks and attention, and maybe even adopt a pet from an animal shelter.

Tell us some ways your family is being kind to animals during the month of Cheshvan in the comments below.  Click here if you would like to infuse some imaginative play into your farm outing with DIY farm animal ears, and if you would like to discover more special activities to do with your family this month (think rainbows), we are coloring the wind with a rainbow ring and making yummy edible rainbows and marshmallow clouds, and for more ideas on the Jewish value Tza’ar Ba’alet Chayim (Kindness to Animals) click here!

Wishing you a wonderful day filled with kindness!
